I know diets, especially fad diets are some of the worst things ever, however, eating cleaner is the way to go. Has anyone tried the Paleo diet? I am not looking to go hard core but to incorporate most of the paleo stuff into my life. Eat as little of the processed foods as possible. Thoughts?

Losing weight is like 30% exercise and 70% dieting. You don't have to do anything crazy. When I lost 30lbs in 5 months, I stopped eating fast/greasey food, no pop, no sugary snacks, and never overate. Just eat moderately healthy food. . . in moderation. I did some exercise but it was like 3 or 4 days a week for 30 to 40 minutes.

Paleo took 30 lbs off for me last year and I was never hungry. Read the book "Wheat Belly" to get an understanding of the hows and whys of it. Eliminating wheat from your diet is life changing.

Story time. I had a scare a few years ago, thought I was having a heart attack (was really an infection along my ribcage that caused stabbing pains when I breathed), which scared me into changing my diet entirely. So I switched to the Paleo diet, (still incorporated milks/yogurts though), cut out all sugars, soft drinks, coffee, breads and grains. With this I also was exercising, doing a minimum of a two mile walk each day.
Lost 100 lbs, and gained a renewed love for all things fruit and vegetable. One thing you will noticed, if you go out with friends for a meal and end up eating processed/sweetened stuff it will taste foul, way too sweet and oily.

PLEURISY! I had that, and I have a bad heart and high blood pressure, so first thought was it was the end for me.
As for the diet, realize it should not be a diet, but a way of life change. Good luck!

Thanks for the story and the information. I had a similar thing happen to me in 2011. Though, at the time I wasn't even as heavy as I am now it was still scary. It ended up (after months of diagnostics and 'exploratory' things) being my heart and it terrified me. I shaped up for a while but I have fallen back again and need a more permanent 'fix.'

Thanks! The more positive things I hear the better! I don't think I can stay away from pizza though. I will have to limit it a bit more.

Move more eat less. It's not rocket science and it's worked for me in the past but I am a good bit older now and it's harder than it used to be.

I've found the diet is easy to maintain, the exercising is what's hard. Not the fact that you have to do it, but the fact that you're doing it alone. If you have someone to head to the gym with, or go jogging with it makes it a hell of a lot easier.

A common saying in Paleo is 80% Paleo 100% of the time, Explains it well and words to live by. Work out hard for 30 minutes 3 times a week. DON'T overdo workouts. Google Caveman Diet for a quick easy understanding of why. Good luck and let us know how you do.
p.s. Your new energy levels will surprise you. All of them, if you catch my drift.

My problem isn't exercising so much it's finding the money to eat healthier. Eating nothing but meat and veggies gets expensive quick.

Much appreciated. The 80/20 rules sounds appetizing for sure.

All diets are equally effective. They basically work by getting you to pay attention to what you eat. There was an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine a few years back that concluded that it was time to stop studying different diets since all of them led to the same amount of weightless within a kilogram. They advocated education of younger people to set good habits over new fad diets. I would say if you want to try a special diet, pick one that looks doable for you since they are all the same anyway.

My recipe for not gaining excess weight has been something like this:
If you must snack chose flavor over fullness. 3-4 garlic stuffed olives or a pickle have a butt-ton of flavor but only like 30 calories.
When it comes to drinking (beer specifically): enjoy one or two of the good stuff and stay away from the cheap stuff, it's way more satisfying to have 1-2 IPAs/Stouts/whatever tastes good to you, than it is to drink 12 light beers. It might not get you drunk like 12 cheap beers but it satisfies the craving for beer flavor.
When cooking food: learn to use herbs and spices over fat and salt. Fat and salt seem to make the brain crave more, probably a biological trigger. Herbs and whatnot are still tasty without making one want to overeat. I've made some damned good shrimp skewers with lime-juice/garlic/chilies/cumin/cilantro that didn't need a bit of salt or added fat to be satisfying. I've used to same seasoning plus very little salt (1/2 teaspoon) to make oven roasted peanuts (raw peanuts are about a dollar a pound) and about a quarter cup makes a tasty and flavorful snack while being low on calories compared to the amount of potato chips I'd end up eating if I reached for those.

You will lose weight slower. So 30lbs may take you a year or year and a half. After that, just maintain an exercise schedule and you can maintain your weight. You will also be less likely to gain the weight back!

Thanks for the tips! I definitely have to reduce my sodium intake. Increasing my water intake is a must too. Just need to create and stick to better habits.
